Chinese semiconductor firm PetaIO Inc. of Santa Clara, CA, has transferred 15 U.S. patents related to solid-state drive (SSD) and storage controller technologies to its affiliate, PetaIO Memory Technology (Nanjing) Co., Ltd., according to publicly available records. The transaction was completed in July 2025.
The patents in question cover a wide range of technologies used in NAND flash–based storage systems, including SSD controllers, LDPC-based error correction, quality of service (QoS) enhancements, command and data buffering, and computational storage architectures. These technologies are core components in enterprise-grade flash storage solutions.
According to PetaIO's website, the company was founded in May 2016 and began building its R&D team in late 2017 to develop enterprise-class storage host controller chips. Headquartered in Nanjing, the company operates R&D centers in Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Wuhan, while also maintaining an international technical presence in Silicon Valley, Taipei, and Seoul. Over 75% of its workforce is dedicated to R&D, with key personnel bringing over 20 years of experience from semiconductor companies such as Broadcom, Micron, Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Toshiba.
