German company Knauf AG has filed a petition for the invalidation of a patent held by South Korea's SFA.
On April 1, 2025, Knauf AG filed an invalidation petition with the Korean Intellectual Property Trial and Appeal Board (IPTAB) regarding Claim 1 of SFA's patent titled "Transfer Shuttle and Automated Warehouse System Using the Same" (Registration No. KR1717447).
Knauf AG initially filed two invalidation petitions for the same patent but withdrew one petition on April 7, 2025. As of now, one invalidation petition remains valid.
Earlier, in December 2024, SFA abandoned its rights to claims 10, 13-14, and 16-18 of the same patent, likely in response to invalidity challenges raised by Knauf AG. As of April 2025, the remaining valid claims of the patent are claims 1, 9, and 15.
The patent, which was filed by SFA in 2015 and registered in March 2017, covers a logistics automation technology involving a transfer shuttle and an automated warehouse system. The transfer shuttle moves along a rail and is connected to shelves to transport goods. The shuttle is designed to extend in the direction of the shelves, facilitating the easy transfer of goods onto the shelves. The automated warehouse system uses this shuttle to efficiently move and store items within the warehouse, increasing the overall use of warehouse space.
