The U.S. Patent Trial and Appeal Board has rejected all three inter partes review petitions filed by Hisense challenging LED-related patents held by Light Guide Innovations, leaving the patents intact amid ongoing infringement litigation.
On Jan. 16, 2026, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board declined to institute IPRs against U.S. Patent Nos. 8,267,537, 8,408,778 and 7,936,415. Decisions denying institution are not separately appealable.
The rejected IPRs targeted three of the patents Light Guide Innovations asserted in a broader infringement suit filed on Jan. 17, 2025, in the Eastern District of Texas, where the company accused Hisense of infringing 16 U.S. patents. Hisense filed the IPR petitions in September 2025, but none proceeded to trial.
Because IPR petitions are typically required to be filed within one year of service of an infringement complaint, the denial leaves Hisense at a disadvantage with respect to the validity of the three challenged patents, absent other pending invalidity proceedings.
Light Guide Innovations has been asserting LED patents it acquired from Suzhou Lekin Semiconductor against multiple defendants in the United States. As Chinese TV makers continue to expand U.S. sales, related patent disputes have also increased.
