LG Energy Solution and Toray Advanced Materials Korea (TAK) have submitted their inaugural joint patent application.

The patent—titled "Transfer release film and lithium electrodes using the same and manufacturing method thereof" (Application No. KR1020230123507)—was filed in September 2023 and disclosed in March 2025.

The application describes a novel method for manufacturing lithium electrodes. Instead of depositing lithium directly onto the electrode substrate, a lithium deposition layer is first formed on a transferable release film. This assembly is then transferred onto the substrate, substantially reducing the exposure of lithium to ambient conditions. The process effectively minimizes oxidation risks and lowers the diffusion barrier for lithium metal, which in turn suppresses the growth of lithium dendrites and enhances battery safety and performance.

Such joint filings are typically the product of strategic collaborative projects. In this context, the partnership between LG Energy Solution and TAK is expected to pave the way for further cooperative advancements in battery technologies.

Prior to this filing, LG Chem's most recent joint patent applications with Toray and Toray Battery Separator Film were made in 2017. Currently, LG Chem and its partners hold 58 registered patents with the Korean Intellectual Property Office as of April 14, 2025.
