Xiaomi Knocks Out 2 Japanese SEL Patents On Lithium-Ion Batteries

China's Xiaomi Communications Co. Ltd. has invalidated two Korean patents owned by Japan's Semiconductor Energy Laboratory Co. Ltd. (SEL) covering lithium-ion battery cathode materials. The South Korea's Intellectual Property Trial and Appeal Board (KIPTAB) sided with the Chinese electronics giant in its invalidation bid.

In a decision issued on August 22, 2025, KIPTAB found SEL's patents — Korean Patent Nos. 2540530 and 2321752, both titled "Positive Electrode Active Material, Method for Manufacturing Positive Electrode Active Material, and Secondary Battery" — to be invalid.

Xiaomi, along with AROOT, the official partner of Xiaomi Korea, filed invalidation petitions in March 2024, challenging claims 1 through 12 of the '530 patent and claim 73 of the '752 patent. The tribunal accepted all arguments, declaring the disputed claims void.

The patents cover cathode active materials designed to enhance cycle performance and capacity in lithium-ion secondary batteries, with applications in electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage systems (ESS).

The decision marks the first time Xiaomi has directly sought to invalidate SEL's patents in South Korea. SEL retains the option to appeal through an annulment action before the Patent Court.
