Samsung Electronics has secured the institution of inter partes review and post-grant review proceedings at the Patent Trial and Appeal Board against 11 U.S. patents held by XiFi Networks R&D.

The PTAB on Dec. 23, 2025, instituted IPRs and PGRs covering all 11 patents after Samsung filed invalidity petitions in July 2025. Institution opens the door to merits review and raises the prospect that one or more asserted claims could ultimately be found unpatentable.

XiFi Networks R&D had previously sued Samsung in December 2024 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, accusing Samsung devices of infringing the same 11 patents now under PTAB review.

The patents generally relate to methods and systems for efficiently managing and allocating bandwidth across multiple wireless channels and frequency bands. The claimed inventions place a so-called "processing layer" between the application layer and the actual wireless MAC/PHY, forming virtual MAC and virtual PHY components that assess available bandwidth across multiple transceivers to enable simultaneous transmission, link switching and band aggregation.

The PTAB instituted IPRs on eight patents — U.S. Patent Nos. 11,818,591; 11,849,337; 11,856,414; 11,950,105; 11,974,143; 12,003,976; 12,015,933; and 12,114,177 — and instituted PGRs on three patents — U.S. Patent Nos. 12,169,756; 12,190,198; and 12,250,564.
