Samsung Display and Dongwoo Fine-Chem jointly filed two patent applications titled "Polarizing plate and display device including the same" with the Korean Intellectual Property Office—one in 2023 and another in 2024. Dongwoo Fine-Chem is a wholly owned subsidiary of Japan's Sumitomo Chemical.
The original application was filed in February 2023 and registered in August 2024 as KR2697378. In August 2024, the companies filed a divisional application under No. KR10-2024-0109831, requesting examination at the time of filing.
The patents describe a single polarizing-plate structure comprising a polarizer, a panel-side high-retardation layer (Ro₁), and a viewer-side low-retardation layer (Ro₂). This arrangement suppresses color and luminance shifts over wide viewing angles while maintaining adequate brightness through polarized sunglasses.
By aligning the slow axes of the two phase-difference layers at an optimal 10°–45°, the design minimizes P- and S-polarization transmittance variation and prevents the luminance drop that occurs when a viewer's sunglasses' transmission axis is orthogonal to the polarizer's absorption axis.
Potential applications include flat-panel OLED and LCD displays, mobile devices, TVs, monitors, VR/AR headsets, and wearable or automotive displays exposed to ambient light or polarized-lens environments.
Although the two companies have filed patents on etchants and photosensitive resin compositions since 2005, these are their first joint applications to feature "polarizing plate" in the title.
