Apple Transfers U.S. Battery Patents To Startup, Retains Security Interest

Apple Inc. has transferred 20 U.S. battery-related patents to California-based battery startup Stacked Energy Inc. and simultaneously secured a lien over those patents.

According to USPTO records, the transaction took place on November 7, 2024, when Apple assigned 20 patents—originally filed and registered under its name—to Stacked Energy. On the same day, Apple obtained a security interest over the transferred patents.

The patents cover a range of technologies related to rechargeable battery components and manufacturing methods. Key innovations include current collectors, separators, electrolyte distribution and coating systems, battery cells, multi-electrolyte cell structures, and inter-cell connectors. The patented inventions aim to improve battery performance and safety, enhance cell balancing, and optimize package design.

While patent security interests are often used in connection with financing, supply agreements, or strategic investments, Apple's retention of a lien suggests it intends to maintain a degree of control or retrieval rights over the technology. The move could indicate a conditional transfer, where Apple has preserved the legal ability to reclaim the patents if certain contractual obligations are not fulfilled.

Stacked Energy was founded in July 2024 and headquartered in San Jose, California. Its partnership with Apple may signal early-stage commercialization efforts under Apple's oversight.
