Xiaomi Communications Co. Ltd. and its Korean partner ARoot Co. have filed invalidation trials against two South Korean patents held by Japan's Semiconductor Energy Laboratory Co., Ltd. (SEL), according to filings with the Korean Intellectual Property Trial and Appeal Board (KIPTAB).
The petitions, filed in March 2024, challenge Korean Patent Nos. KR2321752 and KR2540530, both titled "Positive Electrode Active Material, Method for Manufacturing Positive Electrode Active Material, and Secondary Battery." The KR2321752 patent is a divisional of KR2540530.
According to SEL, the patented technology aims to improve the performance and capacity of lithium-ion battery cathode materials. The inventions relate to a dual-layer surface coating method designed to enhance cycle life and storage capacity. Specifically, the cathode particles are coated with a magnesium-containing layer on the outermost surface and an underlying aluminum-containing layer. Each layer is formed using a sol-gel process: the aluminum layer by applying and curing an aluminum alkoxide solution, and the magnesium layer by heat-treating a magnesium-fluorine precursor to precipitate magnesium onto the surface.
KIPTAB proceedings are ongoing.
