LG Chem has successfully invalidated a patent held by U.S.-based battery technology company Tiax LLC, a development that may complicate EcoProBM's non-exclusive rights to the technology.

On July 31, 2025, the Korean Intellectual Property Trial and Appeal Board (KIPTAB) sided entirely with LG Chem in a validity challenge against Korean Patent No. 2068513, titled "Polycrystalline Metal Oxide, Methods of Manufacture Thereof, and Articles Comprising the Same." LG Chem filed the invalidation trial in April 2023.

Tiax LLC, the patent owner, has the option to appeal the decision by filing a cancellation lawsuit with the Korean Patent Court.

EcoProBM had entered into a non-exclusive license agreement for the invalidated patent in July 2024. The KIPTAB ruling may cast uncertainty over EcoProBM's continued rights to use the patented technology.

EcoProBM had also obtained a license for another Tiax-owned Korean patent, No. 1971442, bearing the same title. Although LG Chem filed a separate invalidation petition against that patent in April 2023, the challenge was later withdrawn.
