Google Korea has filed an invalidation trial against a patent held by Grzegorz Malewicz, targeting Korean Patent No. 1974109, titled "A Method And A Computer System For Providing A Route Or A Route Duration For A Journey From A Source Location To A Target Location."
The petition was filed with the Korean Intellectual Property Trial and Appeal Board (KIPTAB) on March 25, 2025. This marks the first known challenge by Google Korea against a Korean patent held by Malewicz.
The challenged patent covers a method for generating an optimal travel route by considering a combination of vehicles and pedestrian segments based on route requirements that include source and destination locations. It uses anticipated vehicle wait and travel times to compute a minimum expected travel duration and integrates location expectations in a scalable manner, enabling route optimization in large metropolitan areas. The method is designed to be implemented in both computer systems and service platforms.
Filed in 2018 and granted in 2019, the patent claims priority from several U.S. provisional applications, including US62/608,586, US62/613,779, and US62/659,157.
