Magtron Scores Partial Invalidation Win Against Novatech Patents

Magtron has successfully invalidated two shield magnet patents held by Novatech but failed in its challenge against a third, according to decisions issued by the Korean Intellectual Property Trial and Appeal Board (KIPTAB) on May 28, 2025.

KIPTAB found claims 1 through 8 of Korean Patent No. 2234094 and claims 1 through 7 of Korean Patent No. 2232301 — both owned by Novatech and titled "Method for Producing Shield Magnet and Shield Magnet Produced by the Same" — to be invalid. However, the board rejected Magtron's petition to invalidate claims 1 through 3 of Novatech's Korean Patent No. 2171072, which covers a shield magnet module and its manufacturing method.

All three invalidation petitions were filed by Magtron. Both Magtron and Novatech may appeal the decisions to the Korean Patent Court.

Separately, Magtron had also challenged claims 8 through 11 of another Novatech patent (Korean Patent No. 2234093) in 2024, but the petition was dismissed. Magtron has since appealed the ruling to the Patent Court and concurrently filed a scope confirmation trial in December 2024, arguing that its products do not infringe the disputed claims.

The same patent has also been targeted by DIC in a separate invalidation petition, which KIPTAB similarly dismissed. DIC is also pursuing an appeal in the Patent Court.

Meanwhile, Novatech previously succeeded in canceling claim 4 of Magtron's Korean Patent No. 2539184, related to shield magnet manufacturing, in a decision issued by KIPTAB in May 2024.
