Samsung Electronics has acquired full ownership of two U.S. quantum dot (QD) patents, previously co-held with the Korea Photonics Technology Institute (KPTI). The acquisition was finalized in November 2024.
The two patents acquired from KPTI include "Electronic device having quantum dots and method of manufacturing the same" (U.S. Patent No. 9,601,340) and "Devices having nitride quantum dot and methods of manufacturing the same" (U.S. Patent No. 9,287,444).
The abstract for the first patent, "Electronic device having quantum dots and method of manufacturing the same," describes electronic devices featuring quantum dots. According to the abstract, the device includes a first nanorod with a quantum dot disposed on its upper surface and a second nanorod that covers both the lateral surface of the first nanorod and the quantum dot. The first and second nanorods are of opposite types. The corresponding Korean family patent application number is KR1020140043681.
The second patent, "Devices having nitride quantum dot and methods of manufacturing the same," outlines devices incorporating nitride quantum dots along with their manufacturing methods. The device comprises a nitride group material substrate, a plurality of separated nanorods formed on a nitride layer, and a nitride quantum dot on each nanorod. A pyramid-shaped layer may also be present between the nanorods and the quantum dot. Additionally, the nanorods and quantum dots are covered by an upper contact layer, and multiple nitride quantum dots of varying sizes may be formed on each nanorod. The corresponding Korean family patent application number is KR1020140030460A.
