BOE has secured the institution of two inter partes review proceedings against touch-panel patents held by Texas-based PanelTouch Technologies, while a third petition was denied by the U.S. patent tribunal.

On Jan. 16, 2026, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board instituted IPRs against U.S. Patent Nos. 9,250,758 and 8,803,836, both titled "Display Device With Touch Panel." On the same day, the board declined to institute an IPR against U.S. Patent No. 9,507,477, titled "Display Device."

BOE filed the three IPR petitions between July and September 2025. It has also sought IPRs against two additional PanelTouch patents—U.S. Patent Nos. 11,126,025 ("In-cell Touch Panel") and 8,704,762 ("Display Device")—for which institution decisions remain pending.

The PTAB rulings come amid parallel infringement litigation. PanelTouch sued BOE on Feb. 27, 2025, in the Eastern District of Texas, alleging infringement of five patents related to display and touch panel technologies.

The asserted patents—U.S. Patent Nos. 8,704,762, 8,803,836, 9,250,758, 9,507,477 and 11,126,025—are part of a broader portfolio of 143 U.S. patents that PanelTouch acquired in March 2024 from Panasonic Intellectual Property Corporation of America and Japan Display Inc.. Of those patents, 126 were jointly owned by Panasonic and Japan Display at the time of transfer, while the remaining 17 were solely held by Panasonic.
