Samsung Electronics has filed inter partes review (IPR) petitions against two Sinotechnix patents at the U.S. Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB).

The move comes in response to Sinotechnix's July 2024 lawsuit in the Eastern District of Texas, accusing Samsung Electronics and Samsung Display of patent infringement.

The IPR petitions, filed in early and mid-January 2025, target U.S. Patent Nos. 8,132,952 and 7,748,873, covering technologies related to backlight panels with phosphor LEDs and side illumination lenses. PTAB has not yet decided whether to initiate the reviews.

Sinotechnix's lawsuit alleges that Samsung's TVs and monitors, including models like the QN65Q80CAF, UN58CU7000F, and UN75TU690TF, infringe six patents acquired from Seoul Semiconductor and Seoul Viosys in 2022. With IPR challenges filed against two patents, further petitions are anticipated.

Sinotechnix purchased eight U.S. patents from Seoul Semiconductor and nine from Seoul Viosys in May 2022, leveraging them in its claims against Samsung.
