The Korean Intellectual Property Trial and Appeal Board (KIPTAB) has partially invalidated LG Innotek's OLED FMM(fine metal mask) patent, following a challenge targeting specific claims.
In a decision issued on May 16, 2025, the Board canceled claims 7 through 10 and 12 through 15 of Korean Patent No. 2590892, titled "Mask for OLED", which was registered on October 13, 2023. The petition for cancellation was filed approximately six months after the patent's registration, asserting that the challenged claims lacked patentability.
The patent was regarded as an asset in LG Innotek's push into the FMM segment of the OLED industry. FMMs are critical components used during the evaporation process to precisely deposit red, green, and blue subpixels onto a substrate. This is achieved by placing the mask over the substrate inside an evaporator, allowing OLED materials to be selectively deposited. The FMM market has long been dominated by Japan's Dai Nippon Printing.
