Chinese high-nickel NCM cathode producer Ningbo Ronbay New Energy Technology and its subsidiary have launched dual challenges against two LG Chem patents covering cathode active materials for lithium-ion batteries, according to filings with South Korea's Intellectual Property Trial and Appeal Board.

JS Energy, Ronbay's Korean arm engaged in R&D and sales of ternary cathode and lithium manganese iron phosphate (LMF) materials, filed invalidation petitions in early April 2024 against Korean Patents No. 1611784 and No. 1849719. Later that month, Ronbay separately filed scope confirmation actions seeking rulings that its products do not fall within the scope of the asserted patents.

Both patents claim cathode materials formed by secondary particles composed of primary particles whose a-axis crystallographic orientation extends from the core to the surface. The structure is designed to optimize lithium diffusion paths and improve electrochemical performance, including cycle life and charge-discharge rates.

They were originally filed in 2013 by Hanyang University's Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation and Enceramic, registered in 2016, and later acquired by LG Chem in 2022.
