The Korean Intellectual Property Tribunal (KIPT) has canceled portions of Samsung SDI's patent titled "Additive for electrolyte of lithium battery, organic electrolytic solution comprising the same and Lithium battery using the solution" (KR2547064). The ruling, issued in late November 2024, follows a cancellation request submitted in December 2023.

The petitioner argued that claims 1 and 4–15 of the patent should be canceled. The tribunal's decision was "partially accepted, partially dismissed," leaving portions of the patent intact.

The patented technology pertains to improving lithium-ion battery performance and safety. Key benefits of the invention include enhanced battery stability, extended battery lifespan, and increased energy density. These advancements make the technology critical for applications in electric vehicles, energy storage systems, and consumer electronics.

Under Korean law, any party—regardless of direct interest—can file a patent cancellation request within six months of a patent's registration. This policy aims to ensure that patents meet legal and technical standards shortly after being granted.
