Hanwha and SK Solar Energy (SKSE) have jointly filed a South Korean patent for smart blinds that integrate both concentrated daylighting and solar power generation — marking the first time the two companies have co-filed a patent.

The patent, titled "Motorized Blinds With Concentrated Lighting And Solar Power Generation" and registered as KR2748461, was filed in May 2024 and granted just seven months later in December. The relatively short registration timeline suggests the companies may have expedited the process to secure early protection.

The invention discloses a motorized blind system equipped with two types of slats: daylight-concentrating slats positioned at the top and solar-generating slats at the bottom. Each type of slat can be independently tilted, allowing for precise indoor lighting control and enhanced solar energy efficiency.

According to the companies, the dual-function system maximizes energy savings by simultaneously managing lighting and power generation. The structure is simplified through a shared drive mechanism that can independently adjust slat angles. Its ability to switch modes based on room occupancy positions it as a candidate for smart building applications.

Given the filing date in 2024, additional joint patent filings between Hanwha and SKSE may be forthcoming.

To date, this is the only patent filed by Hanwha that includes the term "blind" in the invention title. A separate application was filed in 2023 by Hanwha Engineering & Construction under the name "Blind Slat According To Intensity Of Illumination" (KR1020230001725). That patent remains pending and was published in July 2024.
