Hanwha International LLC has accepted 20 U.S. silicon patents as collateral from REC Silicon Inc. and REC Advanced Silicon Materials LLC under a collateralization agreement executed in January 2025.
The patents, which span a range of technologies, relate to the production of silane-based, high-purity silicon materials and the processing of associated chemical compounds. They cover technical applications in:
-Silicon manufacturing and processing
-Fluidized bed reactor technology (for improved chemical reactions and particle management)
-Process optimization and quality improvement
-Design of special high-temperature and wear-resistant components
-Process control and materials handling
REC Silicon Inc. and REC Advanced Silicon Materials LLC, the entities providing the patents as collateral, serve as the U.S. subsidiaries of REC Silicon ASA. Headquartered in Norway, REC Silicon ASA is a producer of silane-based, high-purity silicon materials that supply critical inputs to the solar and electronics industries.
The transaction aligns with Hanwha's broader corporate strategy. Hanwha International LLC, along with its domestic holding entity Hanwha International Corp.—each 100% owned by Hanwha—continues to expand its influence through strategic asset-backed financing. As of June 2024, Hanwha Solutions Corporation holds a 21.33% stake in REC Silicon ASA, with Hanwha as its largest shareholder, further cementing the integrated relationship between Hanwha and REC Silicon.
