Korean Battery recycling startup RDS (Recycling Development Solution) has successfully defended five of its patents in South Korea.

Between February and March 2025, the Korean Intellectual Property Trial and Appeal Board (IPTAB) dismissed all five patent cancellation requests filed against RDS's patents.

In South Korea, a patent cancellation request can be filed within six months of registration. Such requests can be initiated by any party, regardless of direct interest, often indicating the involvement of potential competitors.

The challenged patents include 'system for recovering valuable metals from wasted batteries' (KR2565372), 'waste battery vertical recycling apparatus' (KR2588151), 'waste battery vertical recycling apparatus' (KR2588152), 'apparatus and method for heat treatment reaction control for recycling waste lithium-ion batteries by dry method' (KR2588154), and 'waste battery recycling device' (KR2588153).

The cancellation trials were filed between February and April 2024, but all were dismissed. As of March 18, 2025, the dismissals for KR2565372 and KR2588151 have been finalized, while the decisions on the remaining three cases are not yet confirmed.

Founded in 2020, RDS is headquartered in Wanju, Jeollabuk-do, South Korea. The company aims to recycle rechargeable batteries from electric vehicles, energy storage systems (ESS), smartphones, and laptops.
