Nichia Corporation purchased 11 U.S. patents related to LED technology from Rohm Co., Ltd. in February 2025. This marks the first instance of Nichia acquiring U.S. patents from Rohm.
The acquired patents all share the same invention title: "Semiconductor light emitting device and method for manufacturing the same." Among the 11 patents, 10 are granted while one remains pending.
The 10 granted patents are part of the same patent family, and all 11 patents share an identical abstract. The abstract states: "A semiconductor light emitting device includes a semiconductor light source, a resin package surrounding the semiconductor light source, and a lead fixed to the resin package. The lead is provided with a die bonding pad for bonding the semiconductor light source, and with an exposed surface opposite to the die bonding pad. The exposed surface is surrounded by the resin package in the in-plane direction of the exposed surface."
Rohm specializes in semiconductors and electronic components, including power semiconductors, sensors, ICs, and LED driver ICs. Nichia focuses on optical semiconductors such as LEDs and laser diodes. While Nichia handles LED packaging in-house, it may utilize Rohm’s ICs for LED driving components.
