Samsung Electronics acquired 10 U.S. LED patents from Polaris PowerLED Technologies in January 2025.

The patents cover LED backlighting, color control, LED driver circuits, dimming and user control mechanisms, and optical detection.

Polaris PowerLED Technologies has a long history of litigation with Samsung Electronics and Samsung Display. Since 2017, Polaris has filed four patent infringement lawsuits against the duo. The cases initiated in 2017, 2019, and 2022 have all reached their conclusions, while a lawsuit filed in November 2024 in the Eastern District of Texas remains pending. That ongoing litigation involves U.S. Patent No. 8,314,572, titled "Apparatus and methodology for enhancing efficiency of a power distribution system having power factor correction capability by using a self-calibrating controller."

In August 2019, Polaris PowerLED Technologies announced a settlement and license agreement with Samsung Electronics, effectively resolving the patent infringement claims that Polaris had brought against the tech giant.
