Dai Nippon Printing (DNP) has seen its bid to secure patent protection in Korea for its "Decorative Sheet and Decorative Laminate" technology fall through.
The application, initially filed in Korea in 2021 under Application No. KR1020217032147 following a priority filing in Japan in March 2020, was rejected by the Korean Intellectual Property Office.
Undeterred, DNP challenged the decision by filing an appeal against the rejection decision with the Korean Patent Tribunal in January 2025. However, the tribunal delivered a final decision on February 28, 2025, dismissing the appeal.
The innovative patent, which has also been filed in Japan, Europe, China, and the United States, describes a decorative sheet that boasts excellent flame retardancy, superior sharpness with clearly visible patterns, and resistance to discoloration.
According to the patent specification, the invention comprises a transparent resin layer, a base sheet, and at least one thermoplastic resin layer—each selected from specific groups of resins. Notably, the thermoplastic resin layer includes at least one layer containing a phosphazene-based flame retardant, while both the transparent resin layer and the base sheet incorporate resins selected from polyolefin-based or polyester-based groups.
