Upia has filed an invalidation petition in South Korea against an OLED mask–related patent jointly owned by PIMS and LN, according to tribunal filings.
The challenge targets the patent titled "Method for Manufacturing Base Frame of Mask Assembly for Depositing Thin Film" (KR1932749). Upia lodged the petition in August 2024, asserting that claims 2 through 5 of the patent are invalid.
The disputed patent relates to a method for precisely manufacturing an OLED thin-film deposition mask frame using electron-beam welding. The technology focuses on improving manufacturing quality and process stability of the mask's supporting structure, rather than the deposition performance of the mask itself.
Upia's core business centers on the manufacturing and sale of aluminum metal products. The company reported 2024 revenue of 30.3 billion won ($22 million) and operating profit of 2.2 billion won.
LN primarily operates in steel plate cutting and bending, steel plate wholesale and retail, steel structure fabrication and electron-beam welding. In 2024, LN posted revenue of 14.2 billion won and operating profit of 1.1 billion won.
PIMS, a KOSDAQ-listed company, focuses on OLED metal mask technologies. The company recorded 2024 revenue of 60.7 billion won, alongside an operating loss of 4.8 billion won.
