Keysight Technologies has acquired a portfolio of 20 U.S. optical design patents from Synopsys, according to assignment records.

The transaction closed in October 2025, with the assignments recorded at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in January 2026.

The portfolio centers on optical design technologies for lighting and display applications. The patents span a range of technical areas, including luminaire architectures and optical extraction techniques, head-mounted display and projection systems, freeform optical design and related design software, as well as next-generation metasurface and metalens technologies.

The luminaire and optical extraction patents cover light guides, side-emitting structures, and methods for controlling uniformity and illuminance, with applications in commercial and industrial lighting such as refrigerated display cases. The HMD, projection, and light-source patents address headset optics, lens configurations, and phosphor-wheel-based illumination systems.

Other patents in the portfolio relate to freeform optical surfaces and software-driven optical design workflows, including CAD-based tools for tailoring lens geometries. The more recent applications focus on metasurface and metalens design, encompassing automated design flows, ray-based analysis, and manufacturing-aware methodologies aimed at compact imaging systems, AR/VR devices, and next-generation optical platforms.
