Korean IP Board Clears KF Coms in GFRP Pultrusion Patent Dispute

A South Korean composites maker has secured a ruling that it does not infringe a rival's patent covering width-variable glass fiber composite panel manufacturing technology.

On Dec. 16, 2025, the Korean Intellectual Property Trial and Appeal Board (KIPTAB) ruled in favor of KFCOMS (Korea Future of Composites), based in Changnyeong, South Gyeongsang Province, in a noninfringement scope confirmation action it filed against Busan-based KSF Inc.'s Korean patent No. 2338199, titled "Manufacturing apparatus for width variable type glass fiber composite material panel."

The noninfringement scope confirmation action — a procedural mechanism used in Korea to obtain a declaratory ruling that a party's product or process falls outside the scope of another's patent — was filed by KFCOMS in June 2025. KIPTAB accepted KFCOMS' arguments and found that its technology did not fall within the scope of the asserted claims.

The decision came after an earlier setback for KFCOMS. In September 2024, the company filed an invalidation petition against the same patent, but KIPTAB dismissed that challenge in May 2025. Roughly one month later, KFCOMS pivoted to seek a noninfringement ruling. Separately, in June 2025, KFCOMS also filed an appeal with the Patent Court challenging KIPTAB's invalidation decision.

The disputed patent relates to a width-variable mold and manufacturing apparatus for pultrusion-based glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) panels. The invention describes a segmented, assembled mold structure that allows panel width to be adjusted during pultrusion by arranging multiple width-directional mold segments between upper and lower molds and fixing them via fastening structures. A central mold segment is spaced apart to secure the pultrusion path and improve shape stability. The technology aims to enhance manufacturing precision, process flexibility and productivity, and is applicable to GFRP panels used in construction, civil engineering and exterior applications.

KFCOMS is a composite materials manufacturer that says it develops and mass-produces a wide range of fiber-reinforced plastics, including GFRP, basalt fiber reinforced plastics, aramid fiber reinforced plastics and carbon fiber reinforced plastics.

KSF Inc. is a composites company specializing in glass fiber- and carbon fiber-based materials, producing various composite products using pultrusion and filament winding processes.
