LG Electronics has jointly filed and registered a Korean patent with Handok Clean Tech, a Daejeon-based water filtration materials company, marking the first patent collaboration between the two firms.

The companies filed the patent in May 2024 and secured registration in February 2025. Korean patents are typically published 18 months after filing, but this invention was disclosed much earlier following prompt registration — suggesting that LG and Handok accelerated the application process to secure intellectual property protection ahead of schedule.

The patent, KR2763621, titled "Carbon Block Filter for Water Purification Containing Zirconium and Method for Manufacturing the Same," relates to a carbon block filter containing zirconium hydroxide designed to remove heavy metals and reduce scale formation through adsorption.

According to the patent description, the invention provides a water purification carbon block filter that incorporates activated carbon and zirconium hydroxide, which effectively adsorbs and removes heavy metals, chlorine, and chloroform from water.

The companies stated that the filter minimizes total dissolved solids (TDS) increases by preventing the elution of ions such as sodium (Na) and calcium (Ca), thereby reducing scale buildup during long-term use.
