The Patent Trial and Appeal Board has refused to institute inter partes review of two ArcelorMittal patents covering pre-coated steel technologies, rejecting challenges brought by South Korean steelmaker POSCO.
In a decision issued Aug. 19, 2025, the board declined to open review of U.S. Patent Nos. 10,961,602 and 11,326,227, both titled "Coated Steel Strips, Coated Stamped Products and Methods." POSCO had petitioned for review in September 2024, arguing that the patents were unpatentable over prior art.
The patents, owned by ArcelorMittal, claim aluminum and aluminum-alloy pre-coatings for steel strips designed to improve corrosion resistance, heat tolerance and formability. They are directed toward applications in stamped products, motor vehicles and other structural materials requiring high durability.
The decision marks the second time POSCO has targeted ArcelorMittal's coating portfolio at the PTAB. In June 2019, POSCO filed an IPR against U.S. Patent No. 9,708,683, also covering coated steel strip technology, but that dispute ended in January 2021 following a settlement.
