Handok Healthcare Co., a newly formed subsidiary of South Korea's Handok Inc., has acquired six U.S. pharmaceutical composition patents from Tokyo-based Theravalues Corp. in August 2025.
The portfolio covers cardiovascular therapeutics, oral nutritional and health supplement compositions, oncology and immunotherapy formulations, and cold symptom remedies.
Handok Healthcare was established in the second quarter of 2025 through a physical division of Handok, which spun off its healthcare products business into the new entity. Prior to the spin-off, the division's portfolio included functional foods, general foods and foods for special medical purposes. Its key products were Theracurmin supplements, the Natureset health food brand, the Ready-Q hangover remedy, and specialty nutrition products such as Neocate, Infatrini and Aptamil Pepti.
The latest patent acquisition follows Handok's longstanding ties with Theravalues. In 2016, Handok invested ¥1.9 billion to acquire the Japanese functional ingredient company from San-Eigen F.F.I. Inc., describing the move as a step toward vertical integration of its consumer health business. At the time, Theravalues was already a supplier of ingredients for Handok's Ready-Q and Natureset products.
Theravalues' flagship ingredient, Theracurmin, is derived from turmeric and processed into fine particles to improve solubility and bioavailability, while eliminating the strong taste and odor of raw turmeric. Handok has incorporated Theracurmin, together with hovenia extract, into Ready-Q to enhance absorption and boost hangover relief efficacy.
