Korean company ES System has successfully invalidated a Sunjin Maru patent covering a floor panel support design, according to a ruling by the Korean Intellectual Property Trial and Appeal Board (KIPTAB).
On Aug. 1, the board sided with ES System in its 2024 invalidation petition against Sunjin Maru’s Korean Patent No. 2249626, titled “Floor Panel Support and Floor Panel Assembly,” invalidating the patent. Sunjin Maru, based in Hwaseong, can challenge the decision by filing a cancellation action with the Patent Court of Korea.
ES System previously sought to invalidate another Sunjin Maru patent — Korean Patent No. 2662450, “Floor Panel and Floor Panel Assembly Comprising the Same,” which is jointly owned with Samsung C&T — filing that petition on Dec. 18, 2024. The board rejected that challenge in April, and ES System did not appeal, making the decision final in June.
Sunjin Maru and Samsung C&T share ownership of two additional patents: “Dry Construction Floor Structure of Buildings” (KR2766423), registered in February 2025, and “Floor Panel Supporting Device” (KR10-2023-0151885), filed in November 2023 and currently published as a pending application.
As of August 2025, Samsung C&T does not hold any jointly filed patents with ES System.
