Hyundai Steel on April 17, 2025, acquired four Korean patents from vacuum‑furnace maker Thermvac and around the same time also acquired one U.S. patent.

The four Korean patents, all titled "<001> textured electrical steels and method for manufacturing the same," are registered under Nos. KR2283222, KR2283225, KR2296376 and KR2283217. The U.S. patent, filed as Application No. 18/288,690, is titled "Electrical Steel Sheet Composed of <001> Texture, and Manufacturing Method Therefor."

The patents cover technology for producing grain‑oriented electrical steel with a <001> crystal orientation. The inventions aim to improve flux density and reduce core loss in transformer and motor cores by aligning grains along the (001) plane, thereby increasing magnetic permeability and lowering hysteresis loss.

Key technical elements include:

Alloy composition control: Optimization of silicon (Si) and other alloying‑element concentrations to regulate grain growth and inhibitor behavior

Cold‑rolling and annealing sequence: Multistage cold rolling → recrystallization annealing → texture‑development annealing to form a microstructure approaching the Goss texture ({110}<001>)

Surface treatment: Dispersion of oxide and nitride inhibitor particles for uniform grain growth and texture reinforcement

The acquired technologies are expected to enable reduced power loss, higher permeability, and the miniaturization, weight reduction and enhanced efficiency of transformers, generators and electric motors.
