Huawei Technologies has initiated two patent infringement lawsuits against MediaTek Inc. and MediaTek Germany GmbH in Munich's court system, a key jurisdiction operating under the Unified Patent Court (UPC).

Huawei alleges that MediaTek's products infringe on two of its patented technologies.

The first patent, EP3905840, covers a system signaling technology that enables New Radio (NR) and Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks to coexist within the same frequency band. According to Huawei, the technology allows NR devices to obtain LTE network parameters via NR Radio Resource Control (RRC) signals. This enables the devices to identify resources already occupied by LTE signals and either avoid transmitting on those resources or operate at zero power, thereby minimizing interference between the two networks.

The second patent, EP4142215, discloses a method and apparatus for acquiring a user equipment's (UE's) NR security capabilities and securely transmitting these capabilities within an LTE network. Designed for environments where LTE and NR coexist, the technology is intended to facilitate the delivery of robust NR security functions by UEs while thwarting "bidding‑down" attacks that could force a downgrade to inferior security algorithms.

This litigation marks Huawei's first patent infringement lawsuit against MediaTek in Europe. Given the UPC framework's reach, a ruling from the Munich court could have far-reaching implications for patent enforcement across multiple European countries.
