Marlin Semiconductor, which acquired 501 U.S. patents from United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC), filed a patent infringement investigation request with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) on February 17, 2025, targeting TSMC and other companies.
The complainants in the investigation are Marlin Semiconductor and Longitude Licensing. The respondents include TSMC, Qualcomm, OnePlus, Motorola, Lenovo, Broadcom, and Apple.
The patents in question, which Marlin Semiconductor claims are infringed, include U.S. Patent No. 7,745,847; U.S. Patent No. 9,093,473; U.S. Patent No. 9,147,747; U.S. Patent No. 9,184,292; and U.S. Patent No. 9,953,880.
Notably, these five patents are the same ones that Marlin Semiconductor and Longitude Licensing used in patent infringement lawsuits filed on February 12, 2025, in the Texas Western District Court and the Texas Eastern District Court against TSMC and others.
Marlin Semiconductor acquired the 501 U.S. patents from UMC between 2021 and 2024. The five patents currently being used in both the patent infringement lawsuits and the ITC investigation are part of this acquisition.
On April 17, 2025, TSMC filed an IPR (Inter Partes Review) request with the U.S. Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) regarding the five patents. A decision on whether the invalidation review will proceed is expected within 6 to 7 months.
