German laser maker IPG Laser GmbH & Co. KG has fired back at Trumpf Laser- und Systemtechnik SE by filing a counterclaim for revocation of European patent EP2624031, escalating an ongoing patent fight in the Unified Patent Court.

The revocation action, formally lodged with the UPC's Düsseldorf Local Division on March 24, 2025, targets a Trumpf patent titled "Method and Arrangement for Generating a Laser Beam Having a Differing Beam Profile Characteristic by Means of a Multi-Clad Fibre." The move comes in response to a patent infringement lawsuit Trumpf filed against IPG in December 2024 in the Mannheim Local Division.

Trumpf's Mannheim complaint alleges that IPG infringed two of its patents—EP2624031 and EP2951625B1, the latter titled "Fibre Optical Laser Combiner." While Trumpf Laser- und Systemtechnik SE is listed as plaintiff for the EP2624031 claim, the infringement case concerning EP2951625B1 names Trumpf Laser UK Ltd as the plaintiff.

The EP2951625B1 patent was originally filed in 2014 by SPI Lasers UK Ltd and later acquired by Trumpf Laser UK Ltd in December 2024. Its U.S. counterpart, U.S. Patent No. 9,620,925 B2, shares the same ownership lineage.

The Düsseldorf counterclaim marks the latest development in the growing legal battle between two of Europe's leading industrial laser manufacturers.
