Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Corporation have acquired two U.S. patents from SMR Automotive Modules Korea Ltd. The transaction, finalized in February 2025, covers technologies in vehicle monitoring and digital mirror systems.
The acquired patents are "Camera Monitoring System Disposed on a Panel of a Vehicle Body" (Publication No. 20230421880) and "System for Driving Digital Side Mirror for Vehicles" (Publication No. 20230398950). Both patents are currently pending registration.
The abstract for A U.S. patent titled "Camera Monitoring System Disposed on a Panel of a Vehicle Body" outlines a safety system integrated into a vehicle's exterior panel. The design features a fixed housing mounted on the vehicle body, within which a movable compartment travels along a designated path. A camera, attached to one end of this movable housing, is actuated by a motor that drives its movement. Notably, a transparent section in the housing aligns with the camera when retracted, ensuring an unobstructed view. A dedicated controller adjusts both the motor's driving force and the camera's activation, optimizing the system's monitoring capabilities.
The Korean family patent application number for this patent is 10-2022-0077310.
Another patent abstract, titled "System for Driving Digital Side Mirror for Vehicles," describes a sophisticated digital side mirror system designed to enhance driver visibility. This system utilizes a moving case, which houses a camera that captures the area surrounding the vehicle's rear and sides. Housed within a guide pipe attached to the vehicle panel, the moving case is engineered to shift forward and backward. Crucially, even when the case retracts, the camera continues to operate, allowing the driver to monitor blind spots with ease, whether before starting the vehicle or after it has been turned off.
The Korean family patent application number for this patent is 10-2022-0070474.
SMR Automotive Modules Korea's majority stakeholder is SMR Automotive Mirror Systems Holding Deutschland GmbH, which is controlled by India's Samvardhana Motherson International Limited.
Hyundai Motor Company, Kia Corporation, and SMR Automotive Modules Korea have jointly filed or registered a total of seven patents in South Korea between 2012 and 2022.
Among the co-filed Korean patents are technologies such as an inside mirror with a built-in clock, a clock mounting structure for the inside mirror, an outside mirror with a rotary-type housing, a side repeater lamp, a lens integral type side repeater, and systems for driving digital side mirrors and camera monitoring systems disposed on vehicle panels.
