Sumitomo Bakelite Acquires 39 U.S. Patents from Subsidiary Promerus

Sumitomo Bakelite Co., Ltd., a Japan-based materials company, acquired 39 U.S. patents from its wholly owned subsidiary Promerus in November 2024.

Promerus, headquartered in Akron, Ohio, oversees Sumitomo Bakelite's research and commercial activities in North America, specializing in polycyclic olefins. Formed in 2001, Promerus was previously the Electronic Materials Group of The BFGoodrich Company and continues to play a critical role within the Sumitomo Bakelite corporate family.

The acquired portfolio includes advanced material technologies applicable to optical materials, photosensitive compositions, 3D printing, mass polymerization, fragrance and cosmetics, and high-performance polymers.

In the field of optical materials, the patents focus on polycycloolefin-based polymers and nanoparticle compositions for optical applications, incorporating UV-active catalysts and photoacid generators to enhance performance. For photosensitive compositions, the patents cover technologies for layers made from nadic anhydride and polyimide-based compounds, with applications in LCD devices and color filters.

Sumitomo Bakelite has been actively expanding its intellectual property portfolio in the United States. Between 2010 and November 2024, the company acquired over 100 U.S. patents, including 28 patents in 2021 and 39 patents in November 2024 alone.
