Sangshin Elecom has successfully invalidated part of Amotech's Korean patent for a multilayer patch antenna (KR1432789).

The Korea Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) issued its decision in January 2025, finding certain claims of the patent invalid. This ruling follows a legal battle that began in September 2022. In 2023 KIPO initially rejected Sangshin Elecom's petition to invalidate the patent.

Unwilling to accept the initial ruling, Sangshin Elecom appealed to the Patent Court, which overturned KIPO's decision in September 2024, citing procedural or substantive errors. The case was remanded to KIPO for reconsideration, ultimately resulting in the recent decision favoring Sangshin Elecom.

The contested patent describes a multilayer patch antenna that receives both GPS and GLONASS signals while incorporating another patch antenna for SDARS signals. The technology claims to reduce antenna size and production costs while ensuring simultaneous reception of GPS, GLONASS, and SDARS signals.

Primarily used in shark-fin antennas for vehicles, the patented technology integrates multilayer patch antennas designed to receive signals across GPS, GNSS, and SDARS frequency bands, offering a compact and efficient solution for automotive applications.
