Samsung Electronics has launched a legal challenge against Finland-based Oura Ring, with four of its eleven U.S. patent invalidation petitions filed between May and June 2024 now instituted by the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). The challenged claims in these four patents face potential jeopardy.
Out of the eleven petitions filed by Samsung, four have progressed to formal PTAB proceedings, two remain undecided on institution, and five have been terminated.
The four instituted cases involve the following patents:
U.S. Patent No. 9,582,034 ("Wearable Computing Device")
U.S. Patent No. 11,868,178 ("Wearable Computing Device")
U.S. Patent No. 10,842,429 ("Method and System for Assessing a Readiness Score of a User")
U.S. Patent No. 11,874,702 ("Wearable Computing Device")
Samsung Electronics filed a declaratory judgment action in May 2024 in the Eastern District of Texas, seeking a ruling of noninfringement concerning five Oura Ring patents. The challenged patents included U.S. Patent Nos. 10,842,429 ("Method and System for Assessing a Readiness Score of a User"), 11,868,178 ("Wearable Computing Device"), 11,868,179 ("Wearable Computing Device"), 10,893,833 ("Wearable Electronic Device and Method for Manufacturing Thereof"), and 11,599,147 ("Wearable Computing Device").
Among these, the ’429 and ’178 patents have since been instituted in PTAB proceedings, while review of the ’179, ’833, and ’147 patents has not been instituted.
Adding to the dispute, Ringconn and Ultrahuman Healthcare filed separate petitions in January 2025 challenging the '178 patent.
