Google LLC and T-Mobile USA Inc., alongside other major telecom players, have petitioned the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) to invalidate seven U.S. patents held by Korea's KT Corporation.

These inter partes review (IPR) petitions, filed between October and December 2024, challenge patents used in a 2023 patent infringement lawsuit initiated by Pegasus Wireless Innovation LLC in the Eastern District of Texas.

The petitioners include Google LLC, T-Mobile USA Inc., Nokia of America Corp., Ericsson Inc., Cellco Partnership, and AT&T Services Inc. The challenged patents are:

U.S. Patent No. 10,616,932: Method for configuring wireless connection of terminal and apparatus therefor.

U.S. Patent No. 11,627,631: Method for processing data on basis of network slice, and apparatus therefor.

U.S. Patent No. 10,638,463: Apparatus and method of uplink control channel resource allocation for new radio.

U.S. Patent No. 11,219,000: Apparatus and method of uplink control channel resource allocation for new radio.

U.S. Patent No. 11,540,272: Method and device for allocating data channel resource for next-generation wireless access network.

U.S. Patent No. 11,405,942: Method and apparatus for transmitting and receiving downlink signal in next-generation wireless network.

U.S. Patent No. 10,721,118: Method for configuring dual-connectivity by terminal, and apparatus therefor.

These patents are among the 4G and 5G standard-essential patents (SEPs) that Pegasus Wireless Innovation claims to hold under an exclusive license from KT. Pegasus disclosed its SEP portfolio in a public list, which includes these seven patents, accessible at Pegasus Wireless Innovation's website.

The challenged patents are also part of the broader group of 11 patents cited in Pegasus' December 2023 lawsuit. That litigation targets a wide array of telecom operators and affiliates, including Sprint Corp., T-Mobile USA Inc., AT&T Services Inc., Verizon Communications Inc., and others. Pegasus alleges infringement of these SEPs in the defendants' wireless networks.
