Samsung Electronics and Ecolab Water have jointly filed a patent application in South Korea covering technology for treating high-nitrate wastewater generated in semiconductor manufacturing.

According to the Korean Intellectual Property Office, the companies filed the application titled "Compounds for Denitrification of Semiconductor Wastewater and Treatment Device for Semiconductor Wastewater Using the Same" (KR10-2025-0209337). The invention relates to a carbon-source composition for biological denitrification and a wastewater treatment device designed to process semiconductor effluent containing high concentrations of nitrate.

The application describes a composition intended to enhance denitrification reactivity while simultaneously improving treated water quality and process safety. The companies filed the application on Dec. 24, 2025, and requested examination on the same day.

The application is a divisional filing of an earlier patent application, KR10-2021-0174252, which was filed in December 2021 and published in June 2023, but has not been granted.

Samsung Electronics and Ecolab Water have previously collaborated on patent filings. In December 2021, the companies jointly obtained a Korean patent titled "Scrubber for Semiconductor with Scale Remover" (KR2341422) with Radion, based in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province.
