Rainbow Robotics, a robot maker controlled by Samsung Electronics, has filed invalidation actions against two robot safety patents owned by Safetics at Korea's patent tribunal.
According to filings, Rainbow Robotics lodged invalidation petitions in late October 2025 with the Korean Intellectual Property Trial and Appeal Board against Safetics' patents titled 'Robot Safety Evaluation Method' (KR2732695 and KR2759672). Rainbow Robotics argues that claims 1 through 10 of both patents are invalid. Hearings are scheduled to take place this month.
The challenged patents describe technologies intended to improve the accuracy of robot safety evaluations by assuming collision scenarios between a robot and a contact object. The methods rely on a three-dimensional image or model of a test robot, configure robot motions based on profiles including movement time and paths, and calculate physical quantities applied to a collision target by considering factors such as the shape of injury-prone areas, effective mass, movement speed and direction. The calculated values are compared against predefined maximum thresholds to assess safety, with the evaluation capable of being performed at single or multiple points in time. When thresholds are exceeded, the system identifies and displays the specific motion segments responsible. Some patents further disclose presenting motion parameter values or ranges designed to reduce the physical impact below the allowable limit.
Rainbow Robotics, which is listed on the KOSDAQ market, reported cumulative revenue of 21.1 billion won ($15.6 million) and an operating loss of 4.2 billion won for the first three quarters of 2025. Revenue more than doubled year over year, while operating losses remained broadly flat. Robots accounted for 83% of total sales during the period.
