Kuraray Korea has failed in one of its invalidation challenges against patents held by Sekisui Chemical, after South Korea's patent tribunal issued a decision rejecting the bid in part and dismissing the remainder.
On Jan. 5, 2026, the Korean Intellectual Property Trial and Appeal Board ruled partially rejected and partially dismissed an invalidation petition filed by Kuraray Korea against Sekisui Chemical's patent titled "Interlayer for Laminated Glass and Laminated Glass" (KR1935215). The ruling came roughly a year after Kuraray Korea filed the petition in February 2025.
The decision effectively leaves the '215 patent intact. Kuraray Korea may appeal the ruling by filing a revocation action before the Patent Court of Korea.
Kuraray Korea had sought to invalidate claims 1 through 13 of the '215 patent. In February 2025, it also filed a separate invalidation petition against another Sekisui Chemical patent, "Intermediate Film for Laminated Glass and Laminated Glass" (KR1408392), asserting that claim 1 of that patent was invalid. A decision on the '392 patent has not yet been issued.
Both patents relate to interlayer technologies for laminated glass. They are based on wedge-shaped interlayers with a thickness gradient and are primarily directed to automotive laminated glass applications, including glass used for head-up display systems.
According to the patent specifications, the claimed technologies aim to enhance optical performance and exterior quality by controlling the structure and property distribution of the interlayer, while also reducing wrinkles, visual defects and deformation during the lamination process.
