A Korean patent held by LG Electronics related to a head-mounted display (HMD) device has been partially canceled. On March 20, 2025, the Korean Intellectual Property Trial and Appeal Board (IPTAB) upheld part of a cancellation request filed against Korean Patent No. KR2676612.

Under Korean law, anyone — regardless of stakeholder status — can file a patent cancellation request within six months of the registration date. While such requests are often submitted by individuals, they are frequently linked to potential competitors acting behind the scenes.

The partially canceled patent involves technology that stabilizes visual output when using an HMD in conjunction with a massage chair. The invention minimizes unintended screen movement caused by head motion during massage. It keeps the displayed image fixed unless the movement pattern of the HMD device differs from that of the massage chair, in which case only user-intended viewpoint changes are reflected.

The HMD described in the patent includes a display module, a communication unit for interfacing with the massage chair, a sensor to track HMD movement, and a controller that adjusts the displayed image based on massage data.

As of March 23, 2025, LG Electronics holds 53 active patents in Korea with "head mounted display" in the invention title. Of these, nine patents — all filed in 2016 and registered between 2023 and 2024 — mention "massage" in the specification. Only one — KR2676612 — has been targeted with a cancellation request.

LG Electronics may choose to appeal the IPTAB's decision to the Korean Patent Court.
