Samsung Electronics has petitioned the U.S. Patent Trial and Appeal Board to institute inter partes review proceedings against three U.S. patents held by Suwon-based AQ Corp. The challenged patents relate to smartphone antenna technology implemented in flexible printed circuit boards.
The challenged patents are U.S. Patent Nos. 11,728,564, 11,495,875, and 11,303,011. Each patent is titled "Smartphone Antenna in Flexible PCB" and lists the same inventors: Sang Hoon Lee, Kyoung Jun Choi, and Sae Rom Lee.
AQ Corp previously filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Samsung Electronics in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas in October 2025. In that action, the Suwon-based company accused Samsung of infringing the same three patents now under review at the PTAB.
According to the patents' abstracts, the asserted inventions relate to a thin, flexible antenna module for smartphones that integrates both a magnetic secure transmission (MST) antenna and a near-field communication (NFC) antenna. The module includes a flexible PCB containing antenna coils and a magnetic sheet coupled to the PCB, with the two components bonded together to form a single structure.
The three patents do not appear to have any corresponding family filings outside the United States.
