Kum Moon Steel has filed a corrected invalidity trial at South Korea's Intellectual Property Trial and Appeal Board (KIPTAB) in July 2025, targeting Hanguk Iron & Steel Industry's Korean patent "Apparatus for Manufacturing Rebar Pile Cage" (KR1853733).
The patent covers an automatic apparatus for manufacturing the internal rebar framework of reinforced concrete piles used in construction and civil engineering. The system rotates multiple main rebars arranged at fixed intervals and helically winds hoop rebars along their surface, welding them together to automatically produce a rebar pile structure.
Kum Moon Steel previously succeeded in an invalidity trial filed in June 2023. In December 2024, KIPTAB accepted Kum Moon Steel's arguments and invalidated claims 1, 4, 6, 8, 9, and 12. Hanguk Iron & Steel appealed the decision to the Patent Court in February 2025.
In April 2025, Hanguk Iron & Steel also sought an amendment trial at KIPTAB, which the tribunal approved in June. Kum Moon Steel responded in July with a corrected invalidity trial to challenge the patent as amended.
