MAN Energy Solutions has secured a victory by having WinGD's Korean patent invalidated. The disputed patent, titled "A large reciprocating piston combustion engine, a control apparatus and a method for controlling such an engine," (KR2095598) was ruled invalid by the Korean Patent Trial and Appeal Board (KIPTAB) in March 2025.

The controversy began in March 2024 when MAN Energy Solutions challenged the patent's validity, arguing that the technology—designed for large internal combustion engines where each piston connects to a crankshaft via a crosshead equipped with a control apparatus to adjust the compression ratio—did not meet the requisite standards for patentability. By enabling dynamic control of the compression ratio, the technology aims to optimize engine efficiency and performance, while potentially reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

The innovation holds broad applications, notably in marine propulsion systems for large vessels and offshore platforms, power generation facilities, and heavy industrial machinery such as rail vehicles and construction equipment.

WinGD, the patent holder, may opt to appeal the decision by filing a cancellation lawsuit with the Korean Patent Court, leaving the final outcome uncertain.
